Key learning pointsLowbrook Farm is a share farming agreement between two neighbouring dairy farmers originated because one of the partners wanted to grow his farm business without having to significantly increase capital outlay, whilst the other wanted to release some of his time to pursue other activities.
The herd now consists of almost 500 cows, which are milked on one farm unit whilst the other farm is used for forage making. This shared management arrangement resulted in cost savings in the region of 35 to 40%.
A third partner recently entered into partnership. His motivation to collaborate came from an ambition to expand his small tenancy unit of 40 cows, despite having limited capital availability.
On joining the partnership, he took on overall responsibility for the herd and labour management, whilst the other active farming partner has focussed on developing crop and forage management.
