Key learning pointsUnder tough market conditions, Ian Newton's business was suffering from under investment, whilst Andy Shaw's business was suffering from too much investment in a new parlour and increased cow numbers. Both felt their businesses were unsustainable going forward.
They formed a formal joint partnership, bringing both farms and herds together now totalling 500 cows. Pooling capital, labour and stock the group greatly improved efficiencies and performance; production costs were reduced by 2ppl and milking time was reduced by over 50% each day.
For Ian and Andy, the key ingredients for success in the partnership include a strong working relationship, an open mind and plenty of outside help from consultants and bank managers.
