Andy Shaw and Ian Newton, Higher Farm

Rotary parlour Key learning points

Under tough market conditions, Ian Newton's business was suffering from under investment, whilst Andy Shaw's business was suffering from too much investment in a new parlour and increased cow numbers. Both felt their businesses were unsustainable going forward.

They formed a formal joint partnership, bringing both farms and herds together now totalling 500 cows. Pooling capital, labour and stock the group greatly improved efficiencies and performance; production costs were reduced by 2ppl and milking time was reduced by over 50% each day.

For Ian and Andy, the key ingredients for success in the partnership include a strong working relationship, an open mind and plenty of outside help from consultants and bank managers.
