Mayhill Lamb Producers

...adding value by building relationships between producer and processor

Mayhill lamb Producers formed to market lambs and to provide a self help facility for its 30 members.

The group coordinates marketing of some 40,000 lambs per year to a range of customers, although the majority are sold to Sainsbury and slaughtered at Llanidloes.

The group benefits from having a close working relationship with their major customer. This relationship has been developed over the last six years and is founded on mutual support.

The group also works together to carry out performance benchmarking which allows all members to benefit from the experiences of other members.

The Mayhill group is a member of the South West Rural Enterprise Gateway Programme and has benefited from support to carry out benchmarking. The group is also an exemplar of best practice to other lamb producer groups in the region.

Central to the group is the provision of a collection centre on one of the members' farm which provides both a very necessary aid to lamb marketing and transport and also acts as a focal point for the group.

Key Learning Points

Building up a long term relationship with their long term customers has allowed them to benefit from the mutual support provided.

The ability to supply large numbers of lambs as required by their customer has made the group an important and valued supplier.

The collection centre has reduced marketing costs and time required for all group members.

Group members inspire each other to improved technical performance.

Working as part of a larger grouping has allowed members to consider new ideas on a large scale such as input buying and feed production.
