Bradshaw Bros

'....investing in processing to supply meats to Staffordshire County Council'

Bradshaw Brothers is a family owned meat business, which began as an abattoir serving local producers, but was closed after Foot and Mouth in 2001.

Following this the business was diversified into a wholesale butchery business by taking the risk of investing in a cutting plant and fleet of delivery vehicles.

They began by supplying meat to nursing homes, retail shops and pubs in area and by 2004 had opened a Farm Shop selling a range of produce from their own farm and several local farmers.

As the retail and wholesale segments of the business have grown Bradshaws have also begun to supply the public sector. They now have a three year supply contract with Staffordshire County Council to supply meat and eggs to child and elderly day centres.

This represents10% of their business and together with the retail and wholesale elements of the business, offers local producers the opportunity to have access to a range of markets they would not be able to supply individually.

Key learning points

  • Bradshaw Brothers contract to supply the public sector complements well the retail and wholesale elements of the business
  • Investing in processing and distribution has helped to explore this new market opportunity.
