Public Sector Produce Supplies (PSPS)

'...eight Yorkshire growers who've formed a group to supply Leeds' city council'

PSPS is a producer-led food marketing and distribution initiative put together to supply Leeds City Council schools with fruit and vegetables.

The consortium includes ten large fruit and vegetable growers, FEAST (Food and Drink Network) which is responsible for administration and marketing, and Greenfields Produce Ltd who manage the orders and Igoo who provide the distribution.

The new venture has secured a three year contract to supply a range of seasonal, local fruit and vegetables into schools. It is worth £750K per annum to the group.

However since winning the contract, PSPS has had to overcome a series of difficulties, including tight delivery times and managing much smaller order than were expected. Once overcome, PSPS hope they have the right formula to expand their business in public sector.

Key learning points

  • Supplying the public sector is challenging. Quality, price and delivery requirements differ hugely from the retail sector, but it can provide an important alternative market if the right formula is found.
  • By working together growers can provide and distribute a broader range of products to cater for school catering requirements.
