Worldwide Fruit: Fruit for Schools

'....a farmer-controlled business supplying over 2000 schools with fruit in the South East '
Worldwide Fruit is a farmer controlled business, which specialises in marketing and distributing top fruit to major UK multiple retailers.

The company is 50% owned by New Zealand growers and 50% owned by English growers, which enables them to offer customers year round supply.

Worldwide Fruit have branched out into public sector, supplying apples and pears to over 2000 schools in the South East of England, under the Schools Fruit and Vegetable Scheme.

They have found that the public sector differs greatly from the retail sector, but by working together with growers and distributors they are able successfully supply the right requirements.

Traditionally small apples have been a waste product, but the public sector contract has provided a market for this fruit, because it caters for young children that qualify for free fruit at school under the Schools Fruit and Vegetable Scheme.

Worldwide Fruit are able to plan well in advance because they know the volume of fruit and price they will receive twelve months in advance, working closely with Minor Weir & Willis who distribute the fruit to schools.

Farmer members benefit from the additional marketing opportunity for their produce as well as sharing in the profits through dividends.

Key learning points

  • By joining an FCB, farmers and growers can supply larger volume contracts in the public sector and share in the benefits
